When varroa infestations become severe, brood begins to die. Here is some pitiful brood, with sunken, greasy looking, dark cappings. Some caps are perforated, but not emptied out. At first glance one would suspect American Foulbrood, but it is only superficially similar. This condition, seen during the last days of collapse of the hive, is known as PMS (Parasitic Mite Syndrome). |
